In the St. Louis area, our subsidiary FW Disposal L.L.C. operates a transfer station, which is vital to the community’s waste management process.

The Essential Link

Transfer stations are enclosed facilities that act as a relay point to help haulers move trash quickly and efficiently to landfills. At our stations, trash is always moved to the landfill within 24 hours, and at the end of every day, they are thoroughly cleaned.

Because of the speed of the trash transfer and our high standards, the site experiences minimal noise, odor or pollution. Here’s how the process works:

  • After picking up trash from homes and businesses, haulers drop trash at a transfer station, where it’s immediately pushed into a trailer that holds 120 to 125 cubic yards of trash.
  • When the trailer becomes full, workers cover the refuse with a tarp and transport it to a landfill.

Transfer stations improve the waste management process because

  • Fewer trucks travel back and forth to landfills, which are usually located many miles from a metropolitan area. As a result, communities experience less traffic, and haulers use less energy.
  • With the shorter delivery distances to transfer stations, communities have the option of requesting haulers to increase the number of times they pick up trash from homes and businesses, which could move refuse more quickly to the landfill.

Following the Rules

Many environmental groups agree that communities need trash transfer stations, but they need them to be built right, to operate in a manner considerate to their neighbors and with the best available technology.

We work within our community and with the DNR to ensure that our facilities are state of the art in terms of handling solid waste at transfer stations.
